But honestly, even just stockfish will probably give you most of what you need unless you want to get into engine vs. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts Log In Sign Up User account menu 39 Looking for a chess database that can make use of engines and game databases Ive done the homework for you. Over the summer, I got back into chess, and the first thing I did was to re-tool my chess set up, and ended up doing a fair amount of research that may as well not go to waste. This is way more up to date research than whats currently in the FAQ regarding SCIDDatabases, so hopefully this will shortcut the work for anyone just digging in. Important point: Im on a Mac, so there may be other options available for Windows that Im not aware of or didnt dig into enough to bother including. Feel free to mention anything I missed in the comments below. For those who have been primarily using lichesschess.com, and want to dig into chess a bit further, having a database can be extremely useful. And in 2018, your path to a high quality set up is actually pretty easy and relatively inexpensive (and potentially free). Chess Database Software You have three obvious options that Im aware of (though likely others for Windows): SCID or SCIDvPC. Upside: its free, has a ton of features, and lets you plug in UCI-compatible engines. In other words, I love that it exists, but I dont love the UI. EDIT: uPossibleOatmeal correctly pointed out that SCIDvPCMac is a fork of SCID, but that they serve different purposes. SCID is more focused on chess database features, and SCIDvPCMac is focused more on UI and engine v. Base version is 100, and goes up from there as you add features. Note: This will work on the mac under an emulator, and there are lots of ways to emulate a PC on a Mac. I like VMWare myself, but personally, didnt want to have to load it up every time I wanted to use my chess database. Hiarcs Chess Explorer - this is a pretty under-rated chess database imho. I chose this one because Im on a Mac and its the only commercial database available for Mac that runs natively. But that said, it is quite good, has a lot of great features, and I like it a lot. Base version is 50. The Deep version with endgame tables and multi-processor support is 100, and you can also subscribe to their professional tournament opening book (which I have tried, and I do like). ChessX - this was recommended as another free alternative by uAntaniserse in the comments below. This is one I havent tried, but from screen shots, it looks fairly similar to Hiarcs, so would seem to mitigate my grievances with the SCID UI at least. If Hiarcs looks interesting, you may want to check this out first and see if it does what you need. Chess Engines Once you have a database, whichever you choose, there are a number of freely available engines. Three obvious free options: Stockfish 9 Critter Version 9 of Komodo Thats kind of where it ends on the Mac, but there are other free engines available for the PC.
